No issue is immediately more visible in our community than the number of empty, boarded-up houses. Abandoned properties are magnets for crime, public health hazards, and pull down the property values of the surrounding neighbors. The longer buildings are left unoccupied, the more uninhabitable and unsafe they become, a problem many neighborhoods around the city are facing today.
State law should be changed to address this issue and empower local communities to better manage foreclosed and abandoned properties. Not only do these buildings need to be responsibly torn down, but a plan needs to be established for rebuilding neighborhoods, so those lots can go toward productive use and our Milwaukee communities can thrive.
